Phase 4 is a tricky phase to teach because the children are not being asked to learn any new phonemes. This phase is simply a run through of lots of words with a pattern of consonant blends at the beginning and end of words. Many children will,  for example, spell train as chrain and stop as sdop. Successful teaching and learning of phase four phonics will help children to break poor spelling habits.
